Hold the Dark

Everyone told her that she was insane

But she headed to the woods alone to reset her brain

She planned, she prepped she even read
Though she would not expect what was ahead

Excited for her aloneness and her chance to disconnect
A long way from home she truly trekked

Through winding roads, woods and desolate places
To a place off the grid without any faces

She worked so hard for her portable home
In her future she has endless plans to use it to roam

It was quiet and it was quaint
In it, she could be herself without any restraint

Her solo arrival was during the hours you stay inside
Though with all that she was she wore fearlessness with pride

She built the fire herself and watched it grow
What hid in the dark she didn't yet know

With her small four legged friend she felt at ease
That was until she saw them deep in the trees

With one there's little worry, though at every angle they stood
She thought about racing back, but wondered if she even could

Their eyes lit up with the night and they multiplied
As she realized she was surrounded her eyes grew wide

They laughed, howled, screamed, and even cried
She looked left and right and realized her furry friend was no longer by her side

Under the moon she stood with a choice
The only weapon with her was her voice

Their elongated bodies and claws rustled in leaves
She shut off her fear to keep her strength in her knees

She could run, she could scream, she could even flee
But life brought her to this moment to teach her all she could be

She built the fire as high as it could go and stood her ground
Her breath, the crackle of the flames, and their movements were the only sound

Just like she had for all these years
She decided to let go of all of her fears

Just like them she had viciousness in her too
It was what got her through all the days that were so blue

It was quite a journey she did embark
So she made her choice to hold the dark
